Makino builds on the existing capabilities and features of its proven EDAF-Series sinker EDM machines by adding a special fine-hole machining configuration that is used to produce high-accuracy EDM drilled holes using an oil-based dielectric system. The fine-hole machining configuration is a factory machine ordered option that incorporates a 1000 rpm rotating spindle, high-pressure flushing, and a programmable W-axis and guide arm assembly.

The versatility of the EDAF-Series fine-hole machine is unmatched, and provides both high-performance standard sinker EDM operation and high-precision EDM drilling on a single machine platform. The integrated guide arm assembly, which contains the adjustable die guide and middle guide mechanisms, can quickly be removed or installed from the machine with a special alignment coupler. The middle guide assembly dramatically improves the performance of machining small-diameter holes by supporting the electrode during operation to prevent whipping or bending.

The performance of the fine-hole machining configuration is targeted at high-accuracy applications that require high-tolerance sizing and positioning, excellent circularity, and fine surface finish with pristine edge quality. The EDAF-Series fine-hole machines are capable of automatic tool changing of electrodes down to 0.004 inches (0.100mm), sizing or shaping of tube or solid rod electrodes with discharge dressing, and production of hole sizes down to 0.0004 inches (0.010mm).
